Business Model Innovation with the Future Space Workshop

in Work & Cases

Picture this:
10:00 am Monday morning on a foggy November day in Vienna. Large conference room. About 50 managers waiting for me to open the conference and expecting (probably) the usual welcome blablabla. Instead I went on stage and hit the play button on my iPod. What music you’re wondering? Nine Inch Nails, “Terrible Lie”.
Can you imagine their faces? I sure had their attention thereafter! I had their attention after this.
Of course I explained myself, illustrating what NIN has to do with business model innovation. The conference was a showcase for a large group event we developed to develop ideas for new business models.

The event has a three step process:

1. Description: participants described their actual business model by using the who-what-how framework. It’s an analysis of the current situation if you like.

2. Inspiration: We had 3 different kinds of inputs: future trends by The Institute for the Future, innovative business models from creative industries by Shapeshifters, cases from very traditional companies that managed to stay competitive for more than 100 years by constantly adapting just enough by Büro für Transfer, and finally examples of current business model innovation like Zara, Nintendo Wii, McCafé etc.

3. Ideation: The final step was meant to use the current starting position and the inspiration provided by these examples to think about new business models for the participants’ businesses.

The result was very positive. We followed up with a survey and participants reported to have developed on average 3 new ideas, with a quality above what they would have been able to develop in a normal workshop. This was in 1 day! Imagine you took 100 people of your company and put them through this 1 day process! 300 new ideas! Above average quality!

Here’s a copy of the facilitation slides and the future trends. Feel free to download and share them. Don’t hesitate to contact me in case you need more information on the workshop.
